Some collaborations are planned. Others feel like they were circling each other for years.
Our paths with Gawakoto and JiuJitsuNerd go back to the same era of jiu-jitsu – the early 2010s, when the culture was still being shaped by homegrown brands, independent artists and people making the things they wanted to see exist. Different places, different voices, but a lot of shared ground.
Gentle Dragon brings those histories together.
A limited kimono built around the contradiction at the heart of jiu-jitsu: softness and force, restraint and violence, calm and intensity. The dragon has always represented power. Here, it wears the gi.
This collaboration pairs Gawakoto’s creature-led visual world, Kinya Hashimoto’s unmistakable JiuJitsuNerd perspective and our approach to considered jiu-jitsu product. The gi is deliberately restrained from a distance; a clean white canvas, subtle embroidery and custom woven detailing – with the artwork revealing itself closer in.
Three names that helped shape their own corners of the same culture, finally meeting in one project.
Made with respect for where we came from, and for the art, ideas and people that have kept growing with us.
