Romão Carvalho
Maxmiliano "Max" Campos is a Brazilian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt — 3rd Degree under Checkmat Europe — and the Head BJJ Coach at Checkmat Oxford in the United Kingdom. A long-standing fixture of the international Black Belt circuit, Campos has built a career that spans Brazil, South America, the United Kingdom, and the European Pro Tour, with podium results at every level he has competed.
His record is the foundation of his standing. Domestically in Brazil, Campos is a champion of both the Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu Championship and the Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu Cup, and a two-time silver medallist at the World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Cup and the South American Jiu-Jitsu Championship. Since relocating to the UK, he has continued at the same level — claiming gold at the IBJJF European No-Gi Championship on three separate occasions, three times taking the top step at the London International and British Open, and reaching the podium at the UK Trials for the Abu Dhabi World Pro Championship.
On the professional submission and pro tour circuits, his work has been just as visible. At Abu Dhabi Grand Slam London, Campos has competed across multiple seasons at Black Belt -69 kg, posting wins over Black Belts including Alexandre Vieira, Diego Marinho, Thomas Halpin, Jan Basso, and Leonardo Kohpcke — running into Brazilian elites including Paulo Miyao and Isaac Doederlein in the deeper rounds. He has also appeared on the Polaris Professional Jiu-Jitsu main card, an invitation reserved for the strongest sub-only competitors on the European scene.
As Head Coach at Checkmat Oxford, Campos has translated that competition pedigree into one of the most respected coaching rooms in the United Kingdom. His curriculum spans the full Checkmat technical system — strong fundamentals, modern guard play, and the "new game" jiu-jitsu of leg attacks and modern submission entries — and he is recognised across the British scene for training a steady flow of high-level competitors and MMA athletes in groundwork and submission grappling.
